Lumbar and Cervical Decompression

Chronic Neck and Back Pain Relief

If you suffer from chronic neck or back pain, you might be a candidate for spinal decompression, a non-surgical, traction-based therapy for neck and back pain. Spinal decompression can provide lasting relief for those who suffer from:

  • Herniated discs
  • Bulging discs
  • Protruding discs
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Degenerative joint disease
  • Sciatica
  • Facet syndrome
  • Radicular pain
  • Joint pain
  • Hypomobility
  • Compression fractures

How Does It Work?

At Bolduc Physical / Aquatic Therapy & Sports Medicine, we use the Triton DTS® traction unit. This alternative to back surgery puts a modern twist on traction, as it is performed on a computer-controlled traction therapy table.

Cervical and lumbar decompression enables patients to achieve relief from severe acute or chronic neck and back pain by gently reducing the pressure within cervical and lumbar discs. As you lay on the table, gentle pulling forces slowly separate the vertebrae, which reduce pressure within the disc. Expanding the space between discs restores nutrients, oxygen, and blood flow to the disc, which allows healing to begin.

Spinal decompression also mobilizes the spine, stretching ligaments and tendons to increase range of motion and flexibility. The decompression unit alternates between a gentle pulling and relaxing. Some patients find it so relaxing that they even fall asleep during the treatment! Heat is typically applied prior to treatment, while ice is applied afterwards.

Depending on the diagnosis, patients typically undergo a series of 20 treatments over a 6-week period. Each spinal decompression treatment lasts 30-45 minutes. At the end of the treatment series, patients can participate in physical therapy with exercises to strengthen the back muscles.

Studies have proven cervical and lumbar decompression to be highly successful in permanently relieving neck and back pain, with very low reoccurrence rates.

To find out if you might be a candidate for spinal decompression, call Bolduc Physical / Aquatic Therapy & Sports Medicine in Boynton Beach at (561) 752-3820 or request an appointment online.

Get Moving Again with Aquatic Therapy

Our pool therapy reduces pressure on joints to provide greater mobility and decrease pain, which increases flexibility for a faster recovery. If you have an injury or condition that makes weight-bearing exercise too painful or risky, then aquatic therapy is the ideal way to begin the rehabilitation process and get moving again.
