Balance and Walking Programs

Balance and walking problems can result from orthopedic conditions, neurological disorders, or injuries that involve the joints, muscles, and nerves. Our therapists realize how important balance and walking is for independent living, as well as leisure or work activities.

At Bolduc Physical / Aquatic Therapy & Sports Medicine, our physical therapists provide intensive 1:1 physical therapy to help our patients achieve the greatest physical gains and independence possible. If you need assistance by a cane or walker, our therapists will match you with the appropriate device and provide training for safety.

Conditions treated include:

  • Gait dysfunction
  • Vertigo
  • Balance or proprioception issues
  • Postural issues
  • Stroke
  • Other orthopedic and neurological conditions

Physical therapy treatments include:

Pre- and Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

Pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation uses therapeutic exercise, modalities, and other components of physical therapy to increase strength, endurance, motion, balance, and coordination for functional independence.

In some cases, physical therapy precedes orthopedic surgery to prepare joints and soft tissues for recovery. Rehabilitation is used after orthopedic surgery, injury, or a neurological event to optimize movement, strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, balance, and coordination to increase function for independent living.

Gait Training

Gait training focuses on strength, endurance, motion, balance, and coordination for safe walking, transferring from one surface to another, and the prevention of falls. Our physical therapists will match you with a walking device or transfer device and teach you and your family about its safe use if necessary.

Core Stability Training

Core stability is a very important part of rehabilitation following a neurological event or orthopedic injury. Core stability training targets the muscles of the pelvis, spine, and shoulders to help provide a solid infrastructure for body movements and balance. Your physical therapist will focus on sitting and standing balance because it is so important for independence with activities of daily living.

Therapeutic Exercise

Therapeutic exercise is commonly used to help keep joints and muscles healthy following a neurological condition or orthopedic injury. Exercise can help muscles gain movement and then strength. Exercise therapy can help improve flexibility, strength, endurance, coordination, balance, and posture. These components are necessary for functional movement and independence with activities of daily living.

Vestibular Retraining

Vestibular retraining uses a combination of body positioning, specific exercises, and eye gaze patterns to help improve balance and reduce vertigo. Our therapists have completed the specialty training needed to provide vestibular retraining and can help people with vertigo from neurological conditions or trauma.

Modalities

Infrared, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and hot or cold treatments are modalities that can help relax muscles, stimulate muscles, increase range of motion, and reduce pain. Your physical therapist may use more than one modality or combine a modality with exercise or another facet of physical therapy to generate the greatest therapeutic effect.

Braces and Splints

Braces and splints are used to position a joint while it heals or support a joint during motion. Braces and splints are commonly used following a neurological event, trauma, or orthopedic condition. In some cases, the use of braces and splints is temporary. In other instances, braces and splints can help increase independence with daily activities, such as walking.

If your balance or ability to walk has been affected by an orthopedic or neurological condition or injury, call the experts at Bolduc Physical / Aquatic Therapy & Sports Medicine. We can be reached in Boynton Beach, Florida at (561) 752-3820 or you can also use our convenient online appointment request form.

Get Moving Again with Aquatic Therapy

Our pool therapy reduces pressure on joints to provide greater mobility and decrease pain, which increases flexibility for a faster recovery. If you have an injury or condition that makes weight-bearing exercise too painful or risky, then aquatic therapy is the ideal way to begin the rehabilitation process and get moving again.
